According to the Federal Reserve, banknotes that are circulated in both Asia and Europe are quarantined from 07 to 10 days to protect citizens from Coronavirus.

While the whole world is struggling against the Coronavirus or COVID-19, our daily life has changed a lot. Many businesses must temporarily cease operation, and individuals are urged to avoid gathering in groups of more than 10. However, the number of infected patients has kept increasing in one way or another.

How to control viral spreading is now the most-interested issue. Along with the government, people have made efforts to protect themselves from the disease: they even start to shun paper money because it is considered as the carrier of COVID-19.

Will banknotes become a source of viral infection or not?

According to health experts, it is unlikely that banknotes will carry the Coronavirus and transfer it from person to person. But it is not enough reassuring for both individuals and businesses to continue using cash in all transactions like before. Some countries, in fact, have urged their citizens to limit using paper money.

In Washington, lots of diners have informed that they will no longer accept cash. The same thing also happened to a bookstore in Chicago a few days ago. “No-contact” delivery has become the top choice of many delivery services.

Many countries choose to stop using cash.

In China, the Chinese Central Bank confirms that paper money has been sterilized as a method to protect citizens from COVID-19. In Jiangsu, a citizen has recently sterilized 3,000RMB (about 443 USD) in a microwave and as a result, it was on fire.

It is true that cash can carry the virus; however, as revealed by experts, it is much safer than many other infectious disease transmission routes. According to a scientific paper, the Coronavirus can survive on cardboard in about 24 hours and live longer on stainless steel and plastic.

Its survivability on paper money hasn’t been tested but experts believe that after touching a surface, virus particles couldn’t return to the air. Moreover, washing hands thoroughly is still the most helpful method to wipe out the deadly virus.

It seems infeasible to use other devices to make payment for items, including debit and credit cards. These cards are made of metal and plastic, and along with the huge number of users, ATMs may be also a terrible source of infection.
