While the current coronavirus outbreak rages on, a man in China reportedly died of the hantavirus. What is a hantavirus and is another outbreak coming?

While the current coronavirus outbreak is still ongoing and threatening many countries, some people are already spreading news of a hantavirus outbreak. In China, news reports said that a man from Yunnan Province in China died from a hantavirus disease, which is transmitted from rodents to humans.

Could we have another virus pandemic soon?

He died while traveling from Shandong Province back to Yunnan, and this news has caused social media to blow up over what could be another virus outbreak when the rest of the world is already struggling with one. But is this really a cause for worry? Let's find out:

Hantavirus? What is that?

Hantaviruses are a type of virus that infect rodents like rats without making them sick, and while it is possible for hantaviruses to transmit from rodents to humans through their urine, feces and saliva, such cases are rare.

The hantavirus comes from rodents and can transmit to humans

Certain strains, if contracted by a human, could cause a disease called the Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, or HPS. It is a respiratory illness that has symptoms quite similar to our current COVID-19

Hantavirus infections are not new to humans like COVID-19. In fact, about 150,000 cases happen around the world every year. The symptoms are usually fever, cough, shortness of breath, headache, etc. which could lead to respiratory failure even with mechanical support.

Should people worry about it like the current coronavirus?

No, you should not worry about the next hantavirus pandemic to go with the current one. It has been around for decades, unlike SARS-CoV-2, and someone unfortunate enough to die from the disease does not translate to an "outbreak".

You won't be seeing medical brigades responding to the hantavirus, period.

In fact, 11 people from Argentina died in late 2018 from a hantavirus outbreak, and that did not lead to a pandemic. Normally, someone dying from the virus wouldn't make the news, but considering the current climate and that the man was from China, it becomes a must-read topic.

So don't pay too much attention to any hantavirus scare at the moment, and focus on our very real coronavirus fight. In fact, stay tuned and check out our coronavirus section on GuruGamer.com for more news and updates on the complex developments of the dangerous new coronavirus, COVID-19.
